I've done some reading of a friends book, but in my own work I have done practically next to nothing. I doubt that this coming semester will fair much better. I'm going to be busy with all of the coursework I'm going to have. Math books are mad crazy expensive, for those of you who don't know. I added up the cost of my books and it comes out to roughly $650. It's one of those expenses in college that you just don't think about until the next semester is actually upon you. I've set this site as my homepage, so perhaps that will encourage me to post here more often and keep updating things. One of the other projects that I want to be doing for Fateless is to redo the map by hand. I think it would look a lot better that way. Paint is a limited program and I haven't the artistic talent nor the patience to make the map look decent on there. Once I have that done I'll replace the map that I have on here, and perhaps make more detailed maps for each of the countries, perhaps outlining provinces or geographic regions as necessary.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-50121418054293757552014-12-14T13:05:00.001-08:002014-12-21T10:40:13.763-08:00Semester completedI've finished the semester off for Fall 2014. It's probably the worst semester I've had grade wise, but hopefully I will have some time to write this winter break. I will need to be getting a temp job so that will take up some time, but hopefully not enough to stop me from making some progress in my writing. Little bits and pieces of progress have been made over the course of the semester, but other than that it hasn't really moved forward all that much.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-40710327243028640382014-08-04T16:49:00.003-07:002014-08-04T16:49:41.013-07:00Writing progressIt looks like this summer has been at least moderately productive. I have reread almost the whole thing and have been taking notes on how to improve it further along the way. I have been toying with the idea of throwing a new chapter (or perhaps a couple new chapters) focused on Valedectus and what goes on in the North after Gaelen has left. Then there also needs to be a few minor changes here and there, and I think I have a good idea for accentuating Gaelen's servitude to his oath by throwing in a prologue and a few key phrases throughout the text, where-ever they can fit appropriately of course. There is still a lot of work to do, and I'm feeling fairly worn down. I don't know what I'm going to be able to do to keep writing this during the semester. It's already getting close and I don't think that I will be able to manage this too well. I'm going to have some fairly rough mathematics courses coming up that will no doubt cut into my writing time all the more.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-39763210683123799552014-07-04T10:47:00.000-07:002014-07-04T10:47:10.753-07:00Summer WritingI have been writing quite a bit more this summer than I had during the semester. I've been focusing on reworking the ending of The Elorean and I have put a dent in it. I need to introduce a few characters that are going to be important in later books, and set up for the future intrigue that is going to be happening in the series. A few things will probably have to be introduced earlier on in the story in different place. I may have to write in a few conversations in different places. All in all things are moving forward, just not at a pace that I would prefer. I'll see if I can get more writing done tonight after work.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-66437161318664853122014-05-22T21:45:00.002-07:002014-05-22T21:45:44.175-07:00The semester is over! The school year is finally over and I should actually be getting around to writing more in The Elorean. As of the moment I haven't made much progress this summer. It's been so long I've had to reintroduce myself to it. Well that's a lie really, and it's not like anyone reads this so I don't have to lie. My girlfriend broke up with me, but we agreed to "keep it on the down-low" for the time being. Despite this we are still moving into an apartment together. I would have to say that this has actually triggered a major depression in me. I am lethargic, irritable, unmotivated and generally in poor spirits, to put it mildly. I have gotten a shit job at a local store so that I can pay rent for the both of us, since she does not as of yet have a job. I feel I owe her that since she has done the same for me in the past. Nonetheless it does not exactly settle easily on my mind. Nothing does. I want to write in my book, and the semester has been over for more than a week. I have done nothing with it, and this depression is really only a few days old. I should have started sooner. Then I might have actually been invested in writing this summer rather than wallowing in my own piteousness. It's not like I expect that this post is going to help. It's just something to distract me from actually being productive. No one reads this shit, so I'm just here wasting my time as a means of avoiding what I should be doing. What the fuck ever. It's not like I'll publish the book and anyone will come here anyway. Yeah bullshit, I've wasted enough time here. I guess I'll just go to sleep, or stare at the ceiling.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-40683883435255970272014-04-30T10:21:00.001-07:002014-04-30T10:21:27.307-07:00The Oath of EloreaI have managed to slip the Oath into the book in a point where it seems to fit quite well. I think it adds to some characterization, and because of who recites it, adds new layers to the meaning of the words. I think it is actually a rather powerful scene now, with multiple angles on the Oath coming into play at once. I think I should probably add bits and pieces of the Oath at different points in the story. They will play a central role in Gaelen's motivations, and this must be made clear. He doesn't demonstrate this enough as of yet. They words of the Oath will be very significant to his psyche, and should be how he copes with the horrors of war, as well as how he must justify his actions, whether foolish or morally ambiguous. I'd also like him to have a certain fixation on a particular line: The wicked, I am to meet with justice. This line in particular should resonate with him, in his fixation on the warrior like aspect of Elorean society. This summer I should have more free-time than previously, so I should have plenty of opportunity to edit further on my writing. I will also try practicing some java and perhaps a few other languages over the summer. I will try to have some means of making more frequent updates here as well.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-8310725467279821662014-04-22T08:47:00.000-07:002014-04-22T08:47:07.570-07:00A semester's endThis past semester has been a bit rough on me. In general my classes are going fine, but it has left me with very little time to actually do my own writing. Not to mention that my flash-drive has essentially reached the end of its lifespan. Twice now I have had issues with data corruption. In one instance I had all of the information on the drive convert to a RAW file type, thus making everything unreachable. I found a program that converted it back to a FAT file type, and thus recovered the majority of my information. Then just this last weekend everything in my Java folder seemed to randomly convert to an amalgamation of ASCII characters with no apparent order, and all of the files could not be opened. I tried using the Scan and Fix Drive option that windows provides, but that wasn't the best idea, since now the folder doesn't open at all. I found another program that scans the drive for any indication of order, and then I can get my old data back. I'll have to get as much of my school work out of the drive as I can, what I don't already have backed up. All in all I haven't had much time to write. I guess I could have spent the time I took writing this to work on something more worthwhile, but I feel that I owe the random blog wanderer and explanation for my general lack of posting here.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-59328824397576749732014-01-20T18:59:00.000-08:002014-01-20T18:59:20.046-08:00Smashwords Short Story: The Rail-WalkerI have put a new story on Smashwords. I suppose that was a little premature. The story itself is still a bit raw. I didn't do much in terms of looking it over, but it already has a good review. I will update it when I get a chance to fix any errors in it. I want to put up the second part before I do that though. I want to start pushing for a thousand words everyday in something, whether I split it up in blog posts, short stories, and poetry doesn't matter. I have been slacking a bit too much. The semester starts up again tomorrow, and I still need to get a job. The beginning of the semester shouldn't be to bad as of yet. Maybe I will still be able to manage being a writer, of more than just code.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-2468343508301962412014-01-17T20:49:00.001-08:002014-01-17T20:49:43.617-08:00Smashwords againI am going to try putting something on smashwords again. I have a short story that is probably going to end up being a bit longer than I originally intended, so I am going to put it up on smashwords as a serial rather than as one piece. I want to get a few parts of it finished first though so that I can edit it and make sure to have some degree of narrative continuity. I should actually write up a complete plot outline for this so that I don't end up losing track of what I was doing with it. I have attempted writing a serial in the past and that has been left incomplete for quite a long while at this point. As it is I may go and add that to Smashwords as well since I cannot republish it and the sight where it currently resides does not contractually claim rights to it anymore. That would also be a good idea, even though it is rather sub-par in terms of writing. As for working on my book, I think I will probably end up cutting off the last ten-thousand or so words, and rewriting that whole segment. Lots of work to do. I better get to it.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-66763431727890213312014-01-14T16:14:00.003-08:002014-01-16T11:56:08.648-08:00The work continuesI've finished re-reading my own book so I am prepared to push onward in my editing. I fixed a few of the minor problems that I had along the way, and I found a good place to include the Oath of Elorea. Instead of having it on a placard I have a character recite it, and I think that it turned out quite well. I still need to change up the ending, and that will be a large chunk of work. I'm trying to get back into writing consistently. I've worked on a few short stories and I've written up a few rants to try and get the weave flowing. It hasn't really worked to well, but I'm making progress anyway. Slowly, and without much inspiration. I should stop worrying about doing poorly while I'm editing. I know this probably isn't the last time that I am going to be editing this page anyway. As is I need to somehow gracefully transition to a period of training, introduce a few characters, and then get back into the action. I don't think I can realistically skip a training period, not without a sudden and unexpected threat...Well that's an idea that I haven't considered before. Perhaps I shall have ***** enter earlier that I anticipated, and he could be followed, jump starting *******'s plans....
That actually might work. I could have a good excuse for bypassing a lull in the tempo of the narrative. Pressure should be building now, not waning. That might be just the trick. I'll have to mull it over and see what I come up with.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-69227716992195293022013-09-04T08:58:00.002-07:002013-09-04T08:58:40.101-07:00Not dead yet...but far from immortalI am still not dead yet, but I think this blog was on the verge of it. I have still been working quite a bit, but not as much as I should be. Writing the book has taken backseat for a little while, since the semester has started again. Even so I will continue to write regardless of what may get in the way. I need to finish the book soon otherwise a may go absolutely insane. As of yet though there is still a great deal of work to do. There is now a finalized version of the Oath of Elorea though...I think I have covered all of the major aspects of their society in a succinct set of lines that reads quite well. Here follows the Oath of Elorea:
It actually came out pretty good, and is better than the 'Creed' I had them using before. It's not actually included in the book yet, but I am going to try to work it in at the beginning, perhaps carved into a placard above Gaelen's door. I've managed to make it about a third of the way through the book now. I've made some major and minor corrections along the way, but I know that most of the heavy editing is going to be in the last few chapters of the book anyway. Still it is a good start, in a fairly short amount of time that I was working on it. The more I consider different names the more I think I like The Elorean. Out of all of the other possibilities that I have considered that seems to fit the best. There are a few problems with that title though. For starters it looks like it was meant to be about a car and someone just took of the 'D' that was suppose to go in front of 'Elorean.' The other problem is that the title is reminiscent of The Hobbit. While Hobbits and Eloreans happen to be very different creatures from one another, they are still unique to their respective worlds and their race would be the defining feature of the book cover which features them. As such I feel that it is a little too closely referencing a Tolkinian work for it to be in good taste. While the Lord of the Rings may have influenced my writing to a degree I don't want to present my works as just a different take on the same kind of world. Using such a similarly themed title seems like a poor choice on my part. Yet I cannot think of a more important aspect being introduced in this part of the story, since the Fire Gate is hardly mentioned and there are few other major themes that have yet to come into play. I will have to keep brainstorming to come up with a better title, but the story itself is coming closer and closer to its final form.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-76851732193027494202013-06-12T17:37:00.000-07:002013-06-12T17:37:24.897-07:00Fire Gate Finished!Well, okay, technically it isn't finished yet, but I have reached what I intend on being the conclusion of the story for this book. Now I am going to have to start editing like mad. I was planning on getting this far much earlier in the summer, but as always I'm running behind my own schedule. I have a fairly good idea of the sort of changes that I'm going to make. A few minor characters are going to have to be introduced by name, and I think I will have to expand upon what happens in a couple sections where, "and then they sailed for two weeks," or "and then they trained for a couple of months." It will give me an opportunity to expand upon the cultures and characters in a more peaceful setting, which I don't take much time to do. I'm also considering some way of prolonging the beginning of the book to give a better idea of Elorean family life. I was thinking that Deshka might not try to hurry them along and insist on resting before heading out(or perhaps Athal is out on a long hunting trip and is not going to be home for another day or so yet). That would let me give an idea of what some of Gaelen's training is like. I also need to expand on Valedectus since several people have commented that they particularly like his character. I myself find him rather interesting and I don't think it would be wise to miss such an opportunity. I'm certain he will be showing up again.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-91232006720699179772013-05-17T09:41:00.000-07:002013-05-17T09:41:09.070-07:00My Mind is going insane without meToday it seems as if my mind is losing itself without me. I have an incredible urge to work on my book and push forward, but despite this I can't seem to find the words to say. I think it probably has to do with not having written in so long. This is the worst kind of writers block. I know what I want to write, but every time I put it on the page it is phrased wrong, or feels tangential to what is already there. I try trimming up what I wrote before to see if I can make it flow more clearly, but then I simply change it back to the way it was. My mind is screaming "Write!" and I can't seem to muster the will to do so. Yet I think all it would take is just an instance of clarity for the words to flow off my fingers. That may be why I have come here to write. Writing should not be forced, and so I am not going to push until I"m too exhausted. Instead I'm just going to give myself a little nudge here and see if i can start off on something worth while.

On a side note I started working on a program to draw 8-bit sprites. It isn't at all far along yet, in fact it technically just opens a blank page and has a short list of colors available, but it's a start. The game I was working on for my Computer Science class turned out nicely so I am going to use that as the basis of the game and will build it from there. I'm going to have to learn how to use sprites though, which we never covered this semester. In the book there is a section on classes which I understand to be necessary to the usage of sprites so I will have to teach it to myself and use a little experimentation in order to determine how to use sprites.

All in all summer isn't starting well. I still have all the resolve I need to do everything, but now that the moment has come it seems as if I am overwhelming myself with everything I want to do all at once. I need to slow down my mind and just work with the fragments that are before me now. The tallest tower in the world is built a brick at a time, I need to remind myself of this and just keep piecing it together brick by brick (or word by word in this case).F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-90868225574307334902013-05-16T13:54:00.001-07:002013-05-16T13:54:38.585-07:00Last of the FinalsMy semester is now officially over. My last final ended just a few hours ago as of the moment of this post. With the coming of the summer I am going to be able to delve into writing my book again. The small amount of work that I lost should be made up by the end of the week and I should be able to come to the conclusion by the end of the month. After that I will begin working on the editing next month, and I expect to be able to add all of the changes that I have decided on in that time period. By the end of the summer I should be in a position to start sending my work to publishing agents.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-9822953163973638412013-05-07T07:47:00.001-07:002013-05-07T07:47:55.236-07:00The school year is coming to a close, and since I don't have any classes this summer I will be able to dedicate myself to writing and working. I've also quite enjoyed the computer science class that I took this year, and you may be seeing some of the results from that. I believe I will have to get a compiler so that you can download my upcoming projects. First and foremost though I will be working on my book, as this is far closer to completion than anything else I've been doing. I've checked my backup files and I only lost about two thousand words with my flash drive. A small chunk from what I've managed to recover from before. This summer I should be able to edit Fire Gate and have it ready to start sending to publishing agents. I am going to have to change the name of the book though, which has been mentioned before. Once I have a decent amount of editing done, and the book is in a more complete state I will post the first couple chapters here. That way I could start asking opinions for potential titles without giving too much away. F. G. An object possessing little volume will of course take up limited space and an object which takes up limited space is easier to be misplaced. Which is apparently what I've done. I lost my flash-drive. Argh! It seems as if sometime a couple days ago I used it in a computer on campus and neglected to put it back into my pocket. As such I am now going to have to redo a significant deal of my homework. Fortunately though my back-ups for my book were only about two-thousand words behind what I had on my flash-drive. I haven't lost too much then in the event that I never recover my flash-drive again. If I do manage to get it back then I think I may invest in a small GPS chip so as to be able to locate it anywhere on the surface of the Earth. That way if I limit myself from extraterrestrial travel I will have a pretty good chance of finding it again.F. G. I think I'm probably going to have to change the title to something else. I don't think i will get to editing it until this summer, but there is a good possibility that I can finish it at least by August. At the moment thought I will have to delay writing in favor of my various classes. I still have two papers and three quiz's to catch up with before the end of the semester. Unfortunately I have to give these priority over concluding Fire Gate. Once I get back to working on it the writing should go quickly since now have a fairly good idea of how I am going to have the conclusion work.F. G. I have a few followers at this point, and I just wanted to see who would come by to read what I write. If you happen to read this post, feel free to comment!F. G. From what I've seen around on the site it is possible to get a fairly large following, but it just takes some time. Since I have a few old short stories that are no longer under contract, but have been previously published, I think smashwords would be a great place to put them up for a wider audience to see. The problem is some of these works are not as polished as they should be, especially considering that they are already published. With a little editing I think they will make a great addition to what I am already offering on smashwords.

In addition to these old short stories I have quite a bit of poetry that is all ready for an audience. I have looked around various places to see if i could find some markets for them, but in general I don't really like many of the places I see, or they wouldn't like my kind of poetry. Therefore I am going to sort through my various poems and make a selection from amongst them in order to put another collection on smashwords.

All of these are going to be free, since not many people are really all that willing to pay for poetry (especially since the masters of old are all in the public domain at this point) and because the short stories I have already published are already available for free elsewhere. I've also decided my first collection of short stories on smashwords should be free as well, given that not many people seem willing to pay for it anyway. I'd rather it is read than to be paid for it.F. G. Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04169129946587004891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1124593991359276651.post-80891831695631972662013-03-26T11:23:00.000-07:002013-03-26T11:23:12.202-07:00Thoughts on WritingI've spoken to people about being a writer before. When they ask what I want to do I usually tell them I want to write. With a certain amount of self-reflection though, this really isn't the best answer I could give. It seems to me that writing isn't something that I simply 'want' to do. I enjoy it, in much the way one enjoys a meal. There is a certain amount of pleasure that I derive from writing, but at the same time if I went without eating for too long I'd starve.

Writing is more than just something I feel that I want to do in my life. It is more of a necessity. When I go without writing for a long while I tend to become jittery and agitated. I start to get annoyed with people practically for no reason at all. So I've come to the conclusion, that whether or not I publish, I will write. I don't think I can go without it.

So, even though writing is something I enjoy I believe writing is an affliction. Living without writing is like living without food, I find I can only last so long. Even if all I do is ramble onto a piece of paper and discard it, I feel better. I write for myself, and this concludes me to the assurance that I won't stop writing, regardless of how long and how fruitless this pursuit may prove. This urge to write is a curse that I bear happily, despite my dependence on it.F. G. After getting some feed back from a few different individuals I decided that certain aspects of the first write up needed to be changed. I've altered the way in which Celestial wizards use magic, making them more reliant on prepared enchantments so that they are significantly less powerful, making the Ardytes more of a threat. I also changed the main character himself, since he was more or less a tool I used to drive the plot on the first write up. The original main character felt quite flat to me by the end of the story. So I gave Gaelen, the new protagonist, all of the character traits that he would need in order to fulfill what I needed him to. The plot follows the same basic course as the first write up, but I'm ending the story about half way through the first write up. I think I may change the title to something else since the Fire Gate does not yet play much of a role in the story. Perhaps, "The Elorean" or something similar.F. G. It now appears properly formatted and makes up the first three chapters of the book. The whole book is about 75,000 words long and I am still editing it myself. If you do happen to catch any typos or awkward phrasing feel free to comment on it. If you like what you're reading I may be persuaded to put more of the story here so that you can read further.F. G. This page has been primarily dedicated to my book Fire Gate, which is now in the process of being rewritten. As such I'm closer to finishing a more recent project, which is on my third run-through for editing. I am going to be attempting to find a professional editing service before I attempt to find a publishing agent for it. I'll post a section of Little Giant on the side bar so that anyone wandering through can leave feed-back if they so desire.F. G. So, I figured I'd give smashwords a try with some short fiction. Nothing too serious but I want to start getting my name to at least exist out here in the good'ol inter-webs. For the tips and stuff before I decided to give you a free copy if you want it. The coupon runs out on May 5, 2012. If you don't use it by then and you still want to take a look just shoot me an e-mail and I can make a new one. The coupon is BE94Y and you can find the short story collection at smashwords here. Take a look and tell me what you think. If you know anybody who might like it then feel free to give them the coupon code. Thanks for all the tips before, and yeah, I'm still trying to write.F. G.
